Il-Gwiedi

Il-Gwiedi in Maltese is the plural of Gudja.  This is a toponomastic name found in other places in Malta.  In fact very close to iż-Żejtun, one finds a village with the name of Gudja.  ‘Gudja’ means a hill and thus Gwiedi is a series of hills.  In fact il-Gwiedi is located in one of the highest points of iż-Żejtun with the Parish Church built right at the upper edge of this area.

Il-Gwiedi was developed during the construction of the new Baroque parish church which started in 1692 and spanned to the third quarter of the 18th Century.

In fact most of the houses at il-Gwiedi, particularly along Immaculate Conception Street, have their main door decorated with the Melitan (Maltese) Baroque molding.

This streets also holds one of the oldest street shrines in the locality dedicated to the Immaculate Conception with the indulgences given by Bishop Labini.
