The housing estate of San Girgor in Żejtun was entrusted to the Royal Engineers by the Government between 1969 and 1977. It was a social housing project. Of interest are the wide open spaces in front of groups of houses. Some of these spaces are planted with trees and bushes and there are areas without cars. This type of urban planning is based on the concept of the Garden Town.

In this area are to be found houses built on the same design and with the same façade. A good deal of study went into planning the interiors of each house, so that all amenities might be included in the least possible space. These plans for residential houses were greatly influenced by the design of British houses. Attention was also paid to hide all services in a shaft and the infrastructure of each house was accessed from a path behind each row of houses.

Although this residential area can still be termed beautiful, unfortunately some of the original houses are being demolished to erect houses or blocks of flats which have nothing to do with the rest of the urban plan of the housing estate.
