L-imsaqqfa or l-isqifa, usually found at the mouth of an alley, is a roofed-over section of the alley itself, usually because a room is built over it, spanning the width of the alley. This is a Maltese architectural element, which is found in different areas of the old villages of our island. L-imsaqqfa is a direct product of the Arab influence on our architecture and can also still be found in various Arab cities and villages.
In Żejtun, one can still find beautiful renditions of l-imsaqqfa, both in Raħal ta’ Fuq, Raħal t’Isfel u also in Ħal Ġwann.
Here one can see the ones in Triq Villa Cagliares, in the Alley in Triq San Ġwann, in Triq San Duminku and in Triq Luqa Briffa. There is another one in Sqaq San Adeodato as well as in Triq San Bastjan, in Ħal Tmikki.
